Information of Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple, Kamalashile, Udupi, Karnataka

Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Kamalashile Village, Kundapur Town, Udupi District of Karnataka State in India. It is a famous goddess temple of Durgaparameshwari, who is an incarnation of Parvathi Devi. This temple is splendidly located near the banks of Kubja River and with the dense forest cover of the Western Ghats. Many pilgrims come here for the Durga Darshana and offer prayers and get blessing from this goddess. The Kubja River and a natural spring is found near by a caves are considered to be holy by its devotees. Many devotees take bath in this river before coming to this temple and drink this Naga thirtha. Its festival is grandly celebrated here and the temple car is a unique wood art found here.

Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple Religious Significance

The main deity of this temple is known as a power full, wisdom and goddess of wealth. Many pilgrims come here to take the blessing of all three values in one temple. The Brahma Rathaoutsava is the chariot pulling festival, which is celebrated grandly with its unique wood carved chariot. The Nava Rathri is celebrated here for 10 days and attracts many pilgrims here. The Laksha Deepostuvam is the famous festival, where 1 Lakhs oil lit lamps are placed in this temple and looks very divine on this day. It is celebrated in the November month and attracts many devotees to this temple.

Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple Mythology & History

As per the mythic stories told by and found on inscription of the Skanda purana of Kanada region has mentioned about this formation of this temple in Kamalashile. Once there was a court dancer named Pingala, who used to perform solo dance in the court of Lord Shiva in the kailash Mountains, which is the heavenly abode for Lord Shiva. One fine occasion the court dancer ignored to dance in this lord Shiva's court. Here the Parvathi Devi got anger and cursed her to be born as ugly lady on planet earth. Very soon she was upset with her curse and started praying Lord Shiva to relive her from the Parvathi Devi's curse. After seeing the prolonged penance by her on earth, the Parvathi Devi came to earth and forgiven here. She also informed her that she will be seen here in the form of Linga with my head on it. Soon after here prayers she found a Linga near the banks of the nearby river and started to praise the Lords. The Devi once again appeared before here and informs that this river will be known by her name since after a temple is built here for her. That's how this temple and the River were named as the Kuubja River in the ancient times. The temple got its name as Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari, since the Linga formed here is an incarnation of Maha Kali, Lakshmi Devi and the Swaraswathi Devi.

Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple Architectural significance

Sri Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple is a traditional Hindu temple. There are many stone art and woodcrafts found here. The entrance to this temple is found with an arched pillar and having a small tower on it. Its temple complexes are found with wood works on the upper portions. There are two large mandapas built here. The main deity is believed to be a self manifestation. There is a beautiful brass sculpture of Durga Maa, which is placed on the backside of this main Linga. It has got a 75 feet wooden pole for flag hoisting. It is totally covered with silver plating on this wood. There are many Frieze found on the inner complexes, these are having sculptors of its sub deities.
