Bekkeswara Aalayam Temple is located in the village named Bekkam, in the district of Mahbubnagar, in the state of Telangana, in South India. It is totally at the outskirt of this district. The primary deity of this shrine is Lord Shiva. According to the local legends, the name word Bekku means "cat" in the language of Kannada. It is largely considered as the ancient seat of Lord Shiva. It is to be highly noted that there is a group of five Sivaalayas known as Siddheswara, Kapileswara, Someswara, Malleswara and Kaleswara just within 15 km of each other in this particular region. The "sthalapurana" cites that this particular village was popularly called Narasingarayapalli in the olden days. It is one of the most sought after and most frequented temple by the local people and pilgrims of this region.

Bekkeswara Aalayam Temple Religious Significance

During the ancient time, a cowherd witnessed a cow directly go into the palm grove plus empty its udder just over an anthill. Suddenly and strangely a cat of huge size lying hidden in the anthill immediately came and wholeheartedly drank the entire quantity given. Then the villagers deely dug out the anthill and to their surprise found a black colored Shvalinga. They in a successful manner built a small temle and installed the linga calling it affectionately as Bekkeswara. As per the local people, the lord is mentioned to have wholeheartedly showered boons to its worshipers with dedication and commitment. Later some years after "bhaktas" brought two huge sized Shiva-lingas from the town of Varnasi and installed them in the same temple compound, but in separate temples. They were known as Moksheswara and Sakaheswara.
