According to the Shrimad Bhagwat puran, this rudraksha was assigned to the eldest son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya who is considered to be the head of the celestial army and also Nairnaya Sindhu which means hidden knowledge. It is believed that this rudraksha has been blessed both by Kartikeya and Ganesha who are the sons of Lord Shiva. In Satapatha Brahmana he is referred to as the son of Rudra and the ninth form of Agni. In Chandogya Upanishad, Skanda is referred to as the 'way that leads to wisdom' and the Baudhayana Dharmasutra also refers to him as 'Mahasena' and 'Subrahmanya'. In the Aranya Parva canto of Mahabharath, the legend of Lord Kartikeya is described in considerable detail and one will also find frequent references of Lord Kartikeya in the Upanishads. He is sometimes referred to as the Supreme Being called Guha or the indweller. In other purans also he is mentioned, even though in a slightly varying forms, but more or less they follow the same pattern.
