Targarh Fort is an ancient hilltop fortress, located at Bundi, Taragarh Town in the Ajmer District of Rajasthan State in the western part of India. It has a record for being the first ever fort to be build on a hilltop in Asia. The great Ajmer City lies beneath this fort. It is surrounded by the Aravali Mountain Ranges. This fort is of Rajput clans and has much historic significance in the history of India. This was a commanding fort in the 14th century AD in the mildest of central Rajasthan province.

Taragarh Fort Architecture

Taragarh Fort is exclusively built up on the Rajput architectural form. This is a massive fortification, constructed with the locally available sandstones and the granite stone from the Aravali Mountains. It is constructed on the peak of the Taragarh Hill. This fortress has three huge main gates. Presently the Laxhmi Pol is the only standing gate. The Phuta Darwaza is half destroyed by the British and the Gagudi ki Phatak is in ruin stage. Its ramparts run across a (3 Km) area in a circular form on the citadel mount. Inside this fortress there are many complexes built. The main structure is of single storied building with vast importance. It has spacious room and halls. The remarkable part of this fort is that, it's one side is very steep slope and the other side of this fort has a slanting slope towards the Ajmer City. The steep hill side is never approached by anyone in this fort history. There are mane made reservoirs found here to cater the water need to this fort. These are actually the mined areas for construction purpose and the pit was later converted in to water catchment tanks. There is a splendid palace inside this fortified area named as Rani Mahal, which was supposed to be used by the queen's and its female servants. It do consist a Dharga inside this complex, built for its governor named Miran Saheb, who was killed in a war and this tomb was built in his memory. Another significance of this fort is its, Tunnels underneath this fort, it is said to be well travelled inside this mount and one can't come out side without a proper map of this tunnel. This fort has a huge projectile cannon named Garbh Gunjam, which has safe guarded this fort in many wars.

Taragarh Fort History

Taragarh Fort was erected in the year 1354 AD by Maharaja Ajay Pal Chauhan, who was a Rajput clan. The entire credit goes to him for building a hilltop fortress, which is believed to be the first in Asia of its kind. It is the Ajmer City was commanded by the Rajputs. This was the Mewar area from 1365 Ad to 1509 Ad This fort was very important in the Battle of Panipath-II in the year 1556 AD. There after the Islamic rulers tried to occupy this province over centuries. The Akbar a Mughal emperor of north sized this province and kept under Mughal rules till the 18th century Ad There after it went to the Maratwad rulers. From the 19th century Ad it was in the hands of the British controls, which ruined this fort for their military purposes. Now it's a ruined remain of the past history of the past glory.

Taragarh Fort is a tourist destination in Ajmer. It is one of the oldest forts in India. To reach this fort by walk, one can have a great trekking experience. The oldest of Indian mountains, the Aravali Ranges are well seen from this forts top along with the Ajmer city and its lakes.
