Sajjangad Fort is an ancient hill fortress and a spiritual pilgrim place in Satara. It is located very beautifully, in a picturesque village. It has vast social, cultural and historic influence over the Marat Wad region in the past era. It is located at Satara District of Maharashtra State in India.

Sajjangad Fort Architecture

Sajjangad Fort is an ancient fort built in many stages. Since the 14th century AD it was occupied by various Kingdoms and many complexes were built here in the passage of times. But this fort remains as the defensive and a residential fort in Satara. This fort model accurse a typical India fort forms in its entire structure. It is located at an altitude of 914 meters above the sea level. A 750 well built stone block steps leads to its top of this fortress. It has got two main entrance gates. These gates are very huge and large one. On the top of its plains, there are two lakes found here. These lakes provide the fresh water to its fort residents. The whole structures are built of granite stone blocks. It has got very good plain areas on its top and many complexes are built here. This is fortified along with the cliff of these hills in an irregular square shape. There are very good living complexes and store rooms found here. It has many important Hindu temples built inside this fort. These are well known as the Ram Mandir, The Hanuman Temple and goddesses temples named as Anglai Devi Mandir. The Ram Mandir is famous since it has got the idols of Lord Ram, laxman and Sitha Devi. The main important structure is the tomb of saint Ramdas. This is well preserved with his medieval period materials and personal belongs are kept as is where condition.

Sajjangad Fort History

Sajjangad Fort history begins from the Bhamani kingdoms rule over here. This fort took its construction phase in the year 1347 AD. The bhamani's ruled here for more than 2 centuries. It was later conquered by the Adil Sha from the south in the 16th century AD. In the same year the Mughal attacked the Sha rulers and brought this fort under their control. But it dint lasted with the arrival of Shivaji as the Maratha Emperor. Soon Mughals were to withdraw from this fort due to his strong army. From 1673 AD it was under the Maratha province. This fort is well known as the Spiritual Capital of Maratha king Shivaji. It was his Spiritual leader named Ramdas Swami, who gave him inspiration for the Swaraj Movement in his time. He was also his personal and official spiritual teacher. This fort is also dedicated him as an honor of the Kingdom. He was ordered to build him shrine here and stay in this fort. After his death a tomb is built here. Still many followers of him come and worship here. It is a festival day in the Dasa Navami days, which is an auspicious day for the Hindus. Presently it is excellently maintained by the Ramdas Sants foundation. This is a protected monument and a heritage site under the state government maintenance.
