The chief significance of the Ratanpur town is the Ratanpur fort, Chhattisgarh. It is reputed as the oldest fort, and the fort is found in the distance of about 25kms, from the main Bilaspur town.

Ratanpur Fort Architecture

The Ratanpur fort today is in a decaying and is at the worn out state. The maintenance of the fort is not looked after hence the fort is at the worst condition and therefore today the significance of the fort is lost and the grandeur and the splendor of the fort have been fading.

The fort however, was guarded by the gorges, on all the sides, including all the four side. The doorways to the fortress, comprises of four entrance gateway which were named as; the Singh, Ganesh, Bhairav, and the Semar darvars. To the entrance of the fort the sculpture of the valiant King is presumed to be installed. The sculpture was prepared of the huge stones, and today the head and the feet of the sculpture remains and the other parts of the sculpture is decayed or worn out due to the natural calamities.

In the main doorway or the entrance of the door the idol and the sculpture of the dancing statue of Lord Shiva, is to be found along with the other statues of Lord Brahma and Vishnu is also found.

Little further to the fort, there is a temple of Laxmi Narayan, and to believe, it was constructed by the Maratha Queen, Anandi Bai. The temple is associated next to the Jagannath Temple, which was constructed by Kalyan Rai. The temples near to the fort give the image of the beautiful Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra.

The entrance at the west side is positioned facing toward the Motipur which is believed to be the place where the twenty Queens of Lakshman Rai had performed sati.

Ratanpur Fort History

The old fort of the Bilaspur, Ratanpur Fort is the highlight of the city. The history of the fortress is not yet accurate, therefore leaving the mystery of the construction shrouded. It is believed that there is no historical evidence or any kind of inscription which can erase the blur of the mysterious construction. There is no evidence which can demonstrate the real commissioner of the fort. With no evidence it has become tough for the historical to put light on this colossal fort, which is an important part of Chhattisgarh.

The fort has many sculptures which are to be that of the God and Goddesses where the visitors are welcomed to visit and have a look at it and put on their prayers before them. In the present days, the bath complex which is also called hamam has been put into foundation and this bath complex is near to the temples of Jagannath and Lakshmi Narayan. It is well thought out to be the problem-solving of the sacrament ablution which were practiced by the natives from the royal family. It is one of the major tourist attractions which plays important role in Ratnapur tourism.
