Nazar Bagh Palace is a great and unique palace found in Baroda. It is 143 old royal palace of the Gaekwad Dynasty. It was once the richest palace in Gujarat and a happening place in the British India rule. This palace is having a large number of valuables and antiques unbelievable to see. It is situated at the Mandivi Gate in Baroda in Vadodara District of Gujarat in India.

Nazar Bagh Palace Architecture

Nazar Bagh Palace is a pure white story building built in the neo classical pattern. It has got a very good look of a European building of medieval periods in India. The amazing part is its step like elevation on this structure. From its ground floor to all three stories have a high rise leaving a few spaces so as to look like steps. This is taken care up to its top floor which is getting inner side from its front portions making it a looks a 3 large steps. This building is constructed with crunched stone aggregates on its major parts of this structure. It is a three storied structure with a small penthouse on its 3rd floor. This penthouse was constructed here as an ornate to its top structure. It is a rectangular shape building having a small width on the front and stretches long in length. The outer front looks with many cylindrical pillars with corridors. These corridors run across the entire structures on its all sides. This palace has also got pillared private balconies. Its halls and living areas are very spacious. A very unique pillared court yard is seen here. There are many storage rooms and small mansion like rooms are present in a lane like order. Its interior are well placed with wooden furniture's, sculptures, portrait painting of the royal clans, art and crafts works of that period. There are special spacious halls for conducting royal functions built here.

Nazar Bagh Palace History

Nazar Bagh Palace was built by the Maharaj Malhar Rao Gaekwad of the Gaekwad Dynasty in the year 1871 AD. This palace got the name Nazar from its local peoples. When this construction was nearing to over, this was looking very classic in style and they said no bad eye's on the palace. The eye's in Guajarati language is known as nazar. Hence it was named as the Nazar Palace. This was their royal palace, where the Gaekwad royal families lived here for centuries. It was a happening palace hosting functions and family rituals here. This palace contained the most of its royal valuables. The remarkable solid gold and silver barrel guns are found here each one weighing a 100 kgs. There are many royal jewels kept here, these are of Diamonds, pearls, gold and silver. In the year 1927 these precious-metals were estimated to be more that 1 Crore US Dollars. Due to vast presence of treasures found here, it was often in news for its robbery and thefts happened here. There were many loots also happened after the India's independence. The royal decedents also took much interest in safeguarding this palace for many years. This was in the news that this palace was on sale and this land was given to a builder for construction of high-rise apartments. But the Gujarat court has put a stay on its demolitions since it is a protected monument. There were dialogs made with the royal decedents and a settlement is happened between the government and its owners. Presently few renovation works are undergoing to maintain it as heritage structure for tourist importance.
