Mulher Fort is a 706 years old distinct hilltop fort. It has a long standing history in the western parts of India, influencing its social and cultural values. This fort stood as defense for many rulers who occupied this fort and its province. It is a great tourist spot to visit a heritage monument. It is located at Mosam Valley, Mulher Wadi Village, Nashik District of Maharashtra in India.

Mulher Fort Architecture

Mulher Fort is built at an altitude of 1311 meters above the sea level. It is the chain of hill Ranges of Dolbar Mountain in of the Western Ghats. It is constructed in the Indian traditional fort type found in the Medieval Era period. This fort occupies a vast plateau surface land on this hill top. This is a defensive fort and it had got very good steep slopes on both the side of its main walls. These steep slopes acted as a natural trench. This fort is constructed with the granite stones and with combination of lime stone mix as cement used here. The stones for construction purpose were cut from the same hills. On the top there is a unique wall built by the Emperor Shivaji in a narrow stretch, this is a strongest walls on these fort areas which is a pathway to its neighboring hillocks. This for consist of many complexes such as temples, palace and caves. There are many caves found here, it is observed to be a living space in those days. These caves are bountifully carved to protect it from the rain and the sun light. There are three water catchment areas here. One is a natural pit, which is considered to be as the main reservoir. The other two are manmade ponds with large stone blocks and carved on monolith stone. It had a beautiful palace inside as the main complex. It was the main courtyard and the living area in those days. The Ganesha Temple is built very beautifully near one of its pond side and adds a special beauty to this temple. It is a carved pillared temple with a triangular tree domes on the top. Another small temple like structure found here is the Samadhi of Bhadangnath. An Islamic style mosque is also found here. In the 18th century it was fitted with three large cannons. This fort also had a specially built three magazine rooms and three other complexes to place the artillery here.

Mulher Fort History

Mulher Fort was built around 1308 AD by the Bagul Dynasty. This fort was untouched with any aggressions until the advent of the 17th century. In the year 1308 AD this fort was captured by the Mughal force of the North India and renamed as the Aurangagad Fort. The Maratha King Shivaji attacked this fort from the Mughals and brought it to the Maratha province in the year 1671 AD. Later on there were tough aggression between the Mughal and the Maratha for this territory. In the hands of the Marathas it sought a very excellent development towards the Mulher Village found here. Shivaji was well known for his asset building. This place was well known in the Vedic Era as the Ratnpur and Mayura Giri in the period of Mayurdwaj Era.
