Kurumbera Fort is an olden fortress situated in Gangeshwar village of West Medinipur of West Bengal. The fort comprises various little shrines along with lodgings and is currently maintained by the 'Archaeological Survey of India'. Enclosed by 10 feet high wall, Kurumbera Fort is regarded as key example of Indian mythology.

Kurumbera Fort Architecture

Kurumbera Fort comprises three arched structure on a single stage along with sacrificial rework. The supports of the fort embrace roofing which appears like a beautiful flower. The fort uses a circular support in order to stern the left ceiling, which is quite stimulating to watch. The design of Kurumbera Fort has certain resemblance with Oriyan architectural style; however, local residents articulate that the design of the fort is not comprehensible. Inside the fort, there is a big yard, ringed by pillared strip. In the middle of the yard there are three sphere-shaped ceilings, which is amazingly craft and architect.

The enclosure of Kurumbera Fort contains the remains of a temple of Lord Shiv and a Mosque which was quite old. The Shiv temple is the key attraction of the fort of the era gone by. Although majority portion of the fort along with its constructions were damaged, the Archaeological Survey of India has taken significant effort for safeguarding the building from crumpling. It has conducted various renovation activities for maintaining its appeal as well as for strengthening the supports. Although it is called a fort it is a colossal enclosure with 172.9 north south and 253.6 east west built of laterite blocks. Though today, the fort remains the ruins, ASI has given much importance looking at its unique architectural design and to protect it from collapsing cement and lime mortar are used in the external pillar for holding the fort. One can see the rare view of the circular pillars and left dome interesting.

Kurumbera Fort History

Although Kurumbera Fort has great historical importance, very few information is available regarding the people who developed it and the reason for creating such building. As per an Oriya legend, Kurumbera Fort was created during the period of 1438 to 1469. On that time, the ruler of the region was King Surya Vamsi. Furthermore, there are certain constructions of the fort which was created during the era of Aurangazeb, by Mohammad Tahir. The Shiva temple in the inner side of Kurumbera Fort was created within the period of 1438 to 1469, on the other hand, the Mosque was created by Muhammad Tahir in the year 1691.

On the basis of Indian mythology, Lord Ram and Sita was resided in the fort during their Banabash. It was also said that in the course of their visit, the fort was created within one night. However, the truthfulness of such information is quite unclear. According to source, John Pierce an ex collector died inside the Kurumbera Fort in the year 1788 AD and today one can find his tomb, which is located close to the Judge Court at south eastern corner of the fort.
