Information on Karanji Mansion (Mysore, Karnataka) - History & Architecture

Karanji Mansion is to be found in Nazarbad Mohalla, which is neighboring to the Mysore T. Narasipur Road. The mansion was constructed for the following princess Krishnajammanni, daughter of Maharaja Chamraja Woderyar, after the construction of the Jayalaxmi Vilas Palace, for his foremost daughter, Rajkumari Jayalaxmi. The mansion was completed in 1914, and is constructed similarly to the other construction of the mansion, which is in Indo-Sarcenic Renaissance style of structural design.

Karanji Mansion Architecture

The mansion houses since 1965 the Postal Training Institute of the Department of Posts, Government of India. It was built in 1902 on an area of 38 acres on an elevated place. It became popular as Karanji Mansion because of its proximity to the Karanji Tank. It was constructed at a cost of Rs. 4,27,610. The Postal Department is maintaining the Mansion well. Apart from training its staff, it has set up a museum here depicting the Postal history of the country.

The mansion built for the second daughter Krishajammanni of Maharaja Chamraja Woderyar, consists of the rooms that has been engraved magnificently, which makes it more adorable. The mansion is surrounded by the green vegetation or the scenery. The architecture of the mansion is designed in the Indo-Sarcenic Renaissance design and comprises stone cleave balconies, cusped arches, carved stone columns and sunshades and it does cover 38 acres on hillocks.The mansion is derived from the Lake named Karanji Lake, which is to be found in the neighboring of the construction.

The mansion acts as the Postal training Institute of the Department of Post. The trainers are trained and this place has been under the use of the Government of India. The mansion has not only been used for the employees use but also it has been set up as a museum depicting the history in the country. The mansion has been under the maintenance of the Postal Department, and therefore has been kept in the well mannered.

Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar had altogether two sons and three daughters. The sons of Maharaja lived in the Mysore Palace which is also known as Amba Vilas Palace. On the other hand, for the three daughters he did built mansions, which were named and recognized according to their names. These mansions were used by the Rajkumaries after their marriage. The entire mansion built by the Maharaja has outstanding look. It is said that the craftsmen who built the mansion was the paramount of those time. The mansion has been set in the expansive garden.
