Kaldurg Fort is a hilltop fort sited at 1550 feet above the sea level in the Palghar hillocks. It is a lesser known fort in Maharashtra and recently it became a favorite place for trekking for Mumbaites and professional mountaineers. It is situated at Vagobacchi Khind, Palghar Town, Thane District of Maharashtra State in India.

Kaldurg Fort Architecture

Kaldurg Fort has no significant design nor built with inner complexes. What are found now are the remains of the few fort walls. Its water tanks show's that once it was a human occupied place. It has lengthy rectangular walls. These are built as such that the fort is divided in to two sections. One can be found in the lower portion of the hilltop main fort. It is just a 10 meter high to reach the hilltop fort. Its hilltop has plan lands found with sand muds. This forts ramparts look like a stone carved structure from the down hills. But these ramparts are built of the same rocks found here. Its ramparts are laid on its full length of the plain areas found on this hill top. It has two water catchment places. One is a monolith stone carved in to big holes and the other naturally found in a pit form. These ponds were the main source of fresh water to the fort dwellers of those times. It has got a very good path way to reach this hilltop. There are stone carved steps. Rock debris made pathway can be found in the non slop areas, so as to not to get slipped in the rainy seasons. It also got many stone blocks steps on its higher regions on the way to nearing of this fort.

Kaldurg Fort History

Kaldurg Fort is also known as the Nandhi Mal. This can be only viewed by artistic sense if one knows about the Shiva Linga. Other who doesn't know about it must see the Shiva temple on its way to the fort. On the highest points one can find many rocks scattered in such a way that it resembles the Nandhi. It is a holly animal of the Hindu belief. On the top of the hills a Lingha like rock resembles the Shiva. This is a belief of the local tribal's since from the olden days. But the lower Shiva Temple is given importance in the recent times by its local peoples. There is no much recode found on this fort. But historians view it from the Maratha kingdom point of view. This fort may be built here to keep a vigil over its neighboring villages. It is also said that its view facing towards the Arabian Sea was mainly built to keep an eye on the Tehelani regions. It doesn't have the colonial impact too. Whoever has built structure is kept for vigil purpose only there are no signs of huge fortification here. It is a historic monument now and a place for trekking.

Kaldurg Fort looks awesome from its heights. One can get a great trekking experience to reach its hilltop from the foot hills of the fortress. It has a vast open plain on its hilltops, from where the entire Thane District can be viewed. Its surroundings are filled with natural scenic areas like hill ranges, lakes and forest. The most beautiful part is the view of the Arabian Sea towards the west, which looks marvelous with the horizons and clouds in the sun set times. Towards the east it has got a splendid view of the Surya River It is a best place for history buffs, fort lovers and adventure seekers.
