Information on Bhujia Fort (Kutch, Gujarat) - History & Architecture

The Bhujia Fort is located in the small town of Bhuj which is located in the Kutch district Gujarat. It has been noted that the fort is constructed at the hill top area of the Bhuj city. It is important to mention that one can see the Bhuj city from the hill top.

Bhujia Fort Architecture

With regard to its architectural importance, the palace is seen to be built mostly following the local style of architecture. It was during the year ranging 1715-1741 that Rao Godaji and his son of the kingdom of Kutch came up with the idea of constructing the fort as a part of protecting their kingdom from intruders. Within the fort there is a temple called snake temple which was also built during that particular period. At the corner of the Mahal there is a minor tower devoted as 'Bhujang Nag', which was also considered as the snake God during that period. There is also a chatri over the palace which enhanced its architectural beauty. After the independence, the fort was took control by the Indian army for executing the military activities. This was possible because of the fact that the fort was made in a form to protect the intruders of the enemies by the rajas. Moreover, since the fort is made at the hill top, one could surely find the weather and the surrounding atmosphere pleasing and calm.

Bhujia Fort History

The Fort which is located at the hill top is positioned at a short distance near to the Bhuj region of Gujarat. From the historical records, it is believed that was constructed in the year 1700s with the intention to protect the Jadeja dynasty and its chief i.e. Rao Godaji. Notably, the primary construction of the fort was started and completed in between the period ranging from Rao Godaji under the guidance and supervision of Rao Godaji who can also be credited with the idea of building this particular structure. However, it is believed that some of the major work with regard to the construction of the fort was under the supervision of Rao Godaji's son i.e. Maharao Deshalji l in between the year 1718-1741. It has been noted that after the completion of the fort almost six minor battles were fought between 1700-1800 in and around the fort. The battles were mainly in between amongst the Rajput ruler of Kutch and the Mughal leader of Gujarat. The fort was also a witness for the battle amid Deshalji l and Sher Buland khan. The latter was the Mughal viceroy of Gujarat when the battle was fought. The prevalence of the fort in the present day is largely owed to the Naga Bawa who were mostly responsible for unlocking it.

The monument i.e. the Bhujia Hill Fort of Gujarat has a rich historical and architectural heritage associated with it which will attract tourists in bulk. Again since the fort is positioned at the hill top, one walking past the fort can find the surrounding area to be photographic in nature. Again the 'Nag Panchami' that is held every year is also an occasion where tourist from all over the country gather in large numbers. The tourist can enter to the fort every day excluding the day of nag Panchami fair. Apart from that easy reach to the fort by both railways and roadways will also influence bulk tourism.
