Allahabad Fort is the biggest fort constructed by Mughal king Akbar. Created in the year 1583 AD, this fort is positioned on the panel of Yamuna River, near the convergence of river Ganges. Traditionally, the fort was regarded as one of the best barracks in the whole Mughal realm. However, at present, very little of the traditional splendour of the fort is left. Once the property of Mughal king, nowadays, Allahabad Fort was taken by the Indian army and act as a barrack.

Allahabad Fort Architecture

Allahabad Fort is a unique specimen of primitive Indian architecture and artistry. It boasts massive walls and three entryways, lined by tall watch towers. The splendid exterior wall of the fort ascends over the water's edge. The exterior wall of the fort is still in good condition and can be observed from Yamuna riverbed. Inside the Allahabad Fort, the most captivating and attractive structure is 'Ashoka Pillar' which was developed by the command of great Mauryan emperor. The pillar is about 10.6 meter tall and is of great significance for historians and archaeologists.

The other interesting structure of Allahabad Fort is famous 'Saraswati Koop' or 'Saraswati Kund' which was believed to be the birthplace of Saraswati River. Another stimulating and attractive monument of Allahabad Fort is 'Jodhabai Mahal'. The architecture of this palace trails the combination of Hindu and Islamic design. Allahabad Fort also houses the illustrious 'Akshayavat' or 'Banyan' or 'Immortal' tress. Legends articulates that if any individual jumps from the tree, he/she can get immortality. However, historians and geologists severely challenge these prerogatives and citizens are not permitted to get near the tree. There is an underground temple named 'Patalpur' inside the fort and a popular railway track which was created by the British East India Company which was used throughout any kind of battle circumstances.

Allahabad Fort History

Allahabad Fort dates back to Mughal era which was the greatest fort of Akbar. However, at present Indian army took over the authority of the fort and only a certain sections are accessible to the citizens. This massive fort is popular owing to its colossal beauty. There are various structures inside Allahabad Fort which were once occupied by the wives of King Akbar. For example, inside the fort there are places according to the name of 'Zenana', 'Marian-uz-Zamani' and 'Jodabai' who were the wives of King Akbar.

The Asoka Pillar which is the most important structure of Allahabad Fort was created in 232 BC. The conquests of Samudragupta, which was considered as the 'Napoleon of India' was admired in the caption of Ashoka Pillar. The pillar also comprises verdicts which were told during the period of prince Ashoka. Apart from that there are two brief profiles and a petition in the pillar which was designed to keep in order the reminiscences of King Jahangir's coronation. Several popular visitors have adorned their name on the pillar comprising Birbal who visited the fort in 1575 during the evening before 'Magh mela'.
