The Kewzing Monastery is situated in the beautiful village called Kewzing and thereby, you can easily identify that the monastery is named after this very village. The Kewzing Monastery is situated on an elevation of 1700 meters above the ground. Here you can spot the famous Maenam Hill and the Ranjit River which are the center of attractions of the village that is apart from the obvious, Kewzing Monastery. The word "Kewzing" is a Sikkimese Bhutia language's local word which literally means "Land of Wheat Field". The other name for the Kewzing village is Sosing, which literally means "Land of Chestnut Forest". The Kewzing Monastery is situated in a village with a population of about 200 people with almost zero amount of pollution. The Kewzing Monastery is indeed blessed to be in a place which has one of the best natural and scenic beauties with relevance to the entire Sikkim. Here you can spot some of the most exotic birds and exquisite lush green forests.

Kewzing Monastery Mythology & History

The legend of building the Kewzing Monastery goes back to the time when the devotees of the Kewzing village wanted a monastery in their village to offer prayers. This necessity was observed by the Late Head Lama of Tashiding Monastery who was popularly known as the Gomchhen Ougden, and it was this noble person who took the initiative to build the Kewzing Monastery in the Kewzing Bazaar which is situated in the southern part of Sikkim. The place where the Monastery stands tall today is donated by a wise villager of Kewzing, Antsho Mondal. This is not it, when the work got started then during that time Lt. Yongden Bonpo donated rupees 2500 to help in initiating the construction work.

It is in this way that few wise and noble people of the village came together and made the Kewzing Monastery to stand with great prestige. It was in the year 1974 that the construction work of the Kewzing Monastery was completed and thereby, Lama Tshampo Norzang became the very first supervisor of the monastery. Later many monks and lamas started enrolling in the monastery and the rest is quiet simple which you can easily spot when you visit the monastery on your own. It is by their joint effort we can understand that nothing in this world is impossible if we have that strong will power.

Kewzing Monastery Architecture

The Kewzing Monastery is having a Tibetan style of architecture and is indeed very attractive. The Kewzing Monastery has only one ground floor and a Tibetan style canopy above that ground floor which adds that extra charm and attraction to the monastery. The Monastery is not very big as other monasteries in Sikkim yet with the spiritual feelings which the people visit it makes it even bigger than it actually is. There are some of the old and historic murals and paintings in the monastery and the statue of Lord Buddha is the most famous amongst all. The Monastery is the right place to meditate as it has got a different place allotted for the meditation lovers. The pollution free environment followed by freedom from that fast and busy life of the city makes the Kewzing Monastery a better place to be.
