After the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama entered India to escape from the Chinese atrocities with his fellow disciples, the Indian government offered full protection to the Tibetan people. The international Himalayan festival is celebrated every year in the Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh in the month of December to mark the event of the reception of the Nobel Prize by H.H. Dalai lama in the year 1885. The festival is celebrated every year in the month of December with the joint efforts of the indo Tibetan friendship society in active collaboration and the help of the central Tibetan administration and also the Himachal Pradesh tourism department. The festival has been a good boost of for the tourism in the state and has been giving the tourists to witness the richness of the Tibetan folk culture.

The festival also acknowledges the efforts of the spiritual leader in the field of promoting the peace and the harmony through his efforts. The festival lasts for a period of 3 days and starts off from the holy shrine that is located at McLeodgang. The festival has been a key factor that has been helping to strengthen the bonding between the native people and the Tibetan population around the place. The international festival showcases the folk dances, the musical programs and various doing arts of the Tibetan culture during this three day celebration. Not only the Tibetan people but also the children and the students from the schools and the colleges take part in the festival and showcase their talents during this festival. Various artists from the other Himalayan nations too are usually invited to perform at the festival. The festival is also known as the global Himalayan festival. The Tibetan people have been living peacefully and have been performing their cultural and the traditional practices in the country. The Tibetan population who took refuge in India has set up various monasteries not just in the state of Himachal Pradesh but also in many parts around the northern part of India.
